Smoking:Can one really quit whenever he wants!

"I will quit smoking whenever i want to", a statement most of us might have heard from our friends who are regular n chain smokers. No matter how much smoking may harm them , whenever asked to quit they will zip your lips with this statement. But the question is. Will they actually be able to quit when they want to? Will the nicotine accumulated inside their bodies permit them to quit smoking? How many stories have we heard of people who have quit smoking and most of them even after succesfull completion of an entire year without smoking, reverted back to their old habit.
Smoking is the most common method of consuming tobaccos and tobacco is the most common substance smoked ,be it in the form of cigarettes , cigars or the Indian ' beedis' and the latest 'in thing' these days is 'The Hookah' .Tobacco smoke contains nicotine that is so addicitive that the body starts craving for it to remain normal .This is 'the pleasure providing devil' that never allows one to quit smoking.
A survey shows that almost 9 out of 10 people start smoking in their teens. The reasons range from becoming part of the coolest gang of the school/college to giving it a try 'just like that' and being unable to quit or doing it just because a close friend or relative does it.It is very common to find guys boasting of the brand they use. For a non smoker like me Marlboro just meant a brand that sponsors big racing tournaments, but to a smoker it means a world. The way we flaunt our Wills lifestilye clothes in a similar fashion they flaunt their Wills cigarette.
'Poor Soul' that is what we think on seeing the pictures of people affected due to smoking habits .But 'is the soul actually poor?'.because it's they who choose to smoke and certainly they will have to bear it's consequences .As the saying goes'as you sow ,so shall you reap'. No matter how much we coax them to stop smoking, they will always procrastinate and say” I will quit smoking whenever I want to, nothing will happen to me”. They tend to behave as super humans when they are just mortal souls with their life span decreasing at blazing speed with the number of cigarettes they smoke.
An interesting survey says that an average smoker in India smokes up to 20-30 cigarettes a day n the number may increase to 60 even when they are upset. Be it the yellowing of teeth, foul smelling breath or ever smelling clothes and body, even these damages that they can see through their eyes are not enough to encourage them to quit smoking, and damages like cancer don’t even scare them a bit. They will smoke no matter what, even if it’s their last they on Earth. A smoker always sees any event as an opportunity to smoke another cigarette. And why shouldn’t they, after all Shahrukh Khan boasted his royal cigar in the Cannes and even Hrithik smokes 20 cigarettes per day n the normal public is meant to follow suit.
Have you ever thought why have all cigarette companies agreed to the government demands of carrying the statutaory warning on their packets
That ‘Cigarette smoking is injurious to Health’ n pictures of people affected due to it? The reason is that they know it very well just like one wouldn’t take the stairs even though they read an advice in front of the lift that “Taking the stair route helps you stay fit’ in the same manner the smokers don’t take these warnings in high regard. The nicotine never allows them to.
Though the Bipasha Basu sugar free advertisements of taking the stairs in place of lift, do seem to make an impact on people, but I believe that tomorrow even if Amitabh Bachan himself came to coax people to leave smoking they never would.Bad habits die hard you see.
Thus ,I would like to conclude that the statement ‘I will quit smoking.whenever I want to’ is totally rubbish and a way of fooling our ownselves . Quitting smoking is even tougher than climbing Mount Everest.
Whenever we read about people who have successfully quit smoking, the one common line we will observe will be ‘It was a monstrous task’.This is because when suddenly they stop smoking their nicotine level drops, they no more receive the pleasure providing drug, their temperaments soar, they feel dejected and depressed and sometimes evn become suicidal. Thus I conclude that smoking if once started can become so addictive that one can even give his life instead of quitting smoking. Thus, if u want to quit smoking, quit it now as’There’s certainly no tomorrow’.
